Vulnerable HTTP Services Report
Information relating to a potentially vulnerable or exposed internet-facing service identified by CSIRT-IE.
Severity
Medium to Critical
The severity depends on the specific vulnerability or exposure identified in the notification email. Prompt investigation and remediation is recommended.
Why have I received this notification?
A vulnerable or potentially exposed internet-facing service associated with your organisation was identified through a Vulnerable HTTP report.
The notification email contains details of the affected system, including the IP address, hostname, service, and any associated vulnerability information (tag).
This does not necessarily mean the system has been compromised. However, the finding should be investigated and remediated where appropriate.
What We Found
The Vulnerable HTTP report identifies publicly accessible web services exhibiting characteristics associated with known vulnerabilities or insecure configurations.
Findings may include:
- Known vulnerable software versions.
- Exposed administrative or management interfaces.
- Publicly accessible repositories or configuration files.
- Weak or insecure authentication mechanisms.
- Product-specific vulnerabilities associated with published CVEs.
The specific issue affecting your system is identified in the notification email.
Why This Matters
Attackers routinely scan the internet for vulnerable systems and exposed services.
Depending on the nature of the finding, exploitation could result in:
- Unauthorised access to systems or data.
- Credential theft or information disclosure.
- Remote code execution.
- Compromise of administrative functionality.
- Further intrusion into organisational networks.
What You Should Do
- Identify the affected system using the details provided.
- Confirm the service belongs to your organisation.
- Validate the reported vulnerability or exposure.
- Apply vendor security updates or recommended mitigations.
- Restrict unnecessary internet exposure.
- Review logs for signs of suspicious activity.
- Verify that remediation has been successful.
Investigating the Finding
Use the information provided in the notification email to identify and investigate the affected system.
- IP Address - Identify the affected asset.
- Hostname - Confirm the exposed service.
- Port - Determine which service was detected.
- Observation Time - Correlate the observation with logs and asset records.
- CVE/Tag - Review vendor advisories and available remediation guidance on the relevant vulnerability.
If the affected system is operated by a third party, contact the relevant service provider for assistance.
How Was This Detected?
This finding originates from internet-wide scanning conducted by the Shadowserver Foundation.
Shadowserver identifies publicly accessible services that exhibit characteristics associated with known vulnerabilities, exposed functionality or insecure configuration and shares these observations with trusted national cybersecurity authorities, including CSIRT-IE.
Technical Background
The Vulnerable HTTP report is not a single vulnerability. It is a collection of detections covering multiple products, technologies and exposure types.
Findings may relate to vulnerable software versions, exposed repositories, insecure administrative interfaces, weak authentication mechanisms, product-specific vulnerabilities or systems that are end of life.
The notification email identifies the relevant finding and any associated CVEs/vulnerable services.
